Monte Cook and Monte Cook Will Lead Sessions at Dungeon Master Academy

Since 2018, Tabletop Vacations has been organizing deeply engaging experiences where experienced game masters lead D&D games in old manors in Britain and at a U.S. castle resort. These all-inclusive trips are highly favored among career game masters who seldom have the moment to join in the game themselves, and they often look for guidance from seasoned professionals on topics ranging from improvisation and creating challenges to dealing with tough scenarios at the table.

In response, the coordinators began crafting a structured way to tackle these topics, which led to the establishment of DMU. The debut workshop is scheduled for the start of 2026 at a university in Atlanta.

“There are thousands of YouTube videos on virtually any subject and learn quite a lot, but the idea was that there’s just no substitute a live, hands-on session alongside other dungeon masters, where direct communication with faculty instructors and your fellow DMs likely in the same boat and aim to improve their skills,” stated the program's dean.

Workshop Options and Ticket Packages

Game masters can choose from options ranging from $995 to two thousand five hundred dollars, depending on the amount of contact they desire with the instructors. The starting package includes a choice of four workshops:

  • Core Techniques: Covers the fundamentals of managing a session.
  • Campaign Building: Is dedicated to building persistent adventures.
  • Universe Design: Concentrates on the art of setting design.
  • Career Building: Aimed at dungeon masters who want to learn more about the roleplaying business.

Each course includes two days of classwork spread over 48 hours.

“The courses are designed so that you walk away with tangible results, increased self-assurance, and many practical techniques,” Carl noted. “They’re not just lectures and they go beyond recorded content. These workshops that you can attend, absorb insights from, and then head back to your table the next week and implement in your local game.”

Expert Instructors

Most classes are instructed by duo of instructors. Universe creation is taught by Monte Cook and Keith Baker, both teaching the craft of setting creation.

Career building features several experts, such as a puzzle design specialist, a podcast co-host, and Hunter Fell. The expanded teaching staff is intended to provide specialized information to attendees with specific goals.

“Certain participants aim to start their own real-play series and display their adventures with the world, several aim to release and create new material,” Carl said. “Some just want to ask, How do I get to be a DM at something like a castle event? What capabilities that I need? Is it for everyone?”

Advanced Options

A $1.5K enhanced option offers access to a welcome reception, a starter kit, and a half-hour consultation appointment with one of the faculty. This marks the first Dungeon Master Academy, though the organizers has previously run similar events during breaks between game sessions at their premium gatherings.

“You could almost run an full two days just on consultation sessions for expert DMs,” Carl said. “I'm not certain if that’s the most effective utilization of everybody’s time – I believe the formal instruction and the lab work is extremely important – but I suspect it’s going to be one of the most popular parts of the program.”

The $2.5K top package provides an extended personal consultation and the possibility to run a game for five players plus an instructor, who will then provide notes and guidance.

“The goal is for the instructor to evaluate whatever the DM is concerned with: I have difficulty with spontaneous decisions or I encounter obstacles in specific fight encounters. Could I demonstrate a situation for you and obtain advice on what my strengths and weaknesses are?” Carl explained. “Perhaps they want to obtain critique and guidance on a specific world that they’ve been developing.”

Coming Developments

Responses from the first event will help shape subsequent DMU events. Carl said that possible changes could include increasing consultation time, making it longer to three days, or testing different seminar structures.

“I expect that we host such events frequently,” Carl said. “I truly hope to see multiple Dungeon Master Universities in a single year, in various locations, and in various nations. The response has been really terrific. We’re very happy with the results so far and I feel it would be amazing to be able to conduct this in partnership with big conventions.”
