Man Detained After at Least 50 Rounds Let Off from Sydney Home

A male suspect aged 60 has been arrested after one individual sustained a gunshot wound, several persons wounded and multiple cars fired upon by a shooter in Sydney’s inner west.

Up to 100 rounds echoed over a two hour window between 7.45pm and 9.30pm on Sunday night in Croydon Park.

Police Launch Large-Scale Response

Roads were shut down and the area was placed in lockdown following the start of a significant police operation in response to information a suspect was haphazardly discharging a weapon towards drivers, encompassing law enforcement automobiles, moving along Georges River Road.

Specialist police teams was called in to detain the male suspect aged 60 from an apartment situated over a shop on the heavily trafficked street.

Authorities Offer Details

Acting Superintendent Stephen Parry stated to journalists during Sunday evening precise figures were not available regarding the total number of rounds discharged “however, it's possible there were in the range of 50 to 100 bullets which were shot”.

He stated several automobiles and properties experienced gunfire and destruction during the incident, however, a fuller account was expected to emerge by morning.

Parry stated the location was brought under control “fairly quickly” and praised the officers involved.

“They showed extreme levels of bravery by carrying out their duties,” he told reporters during a press briefing held late at night.
“They were under a barrage of gunfire on a number of occasions and should all be commended for what they did.”

He could not verify if police discharged their firearms as well throughout the confrontation.

Police Commissioner Recounts Alarming Situation

The NSW police commissioner, Mal Lanyon remarked body-worn cameras from police showed the proximity of officers to being struck while they sought shelter amid the "critical and alarming situation".

“You can hear many shots, and clear strikes, nearby the recording device,” Lanyon informed 2GB radio in Sydney on Monday morning.

One of the officers shot at was a recent academy graduate just five weeks prior, Lanyon mentioned.

The motivation for the gunfire was yet to be determined but Lanyon said no connection was identified to any terrorism or gang activity.

Injuries and Fallout

Emergency medical personnel attended to a group of 16 persons at the scene with non-life-threatening harm.

  • Certain individuals were hurt from broken glass when their windows were struck by bullets.
  • Some received treatment for shock.

A number of people were taken to hospital after being treated by paramedics.

A cab driver who is in his 50s remained in serious yet stable condition having sustained harm to his neck and head area.

Rare Event for the Region

Fortune played a role that additional individuals were not injured, Trent King, the acting assistant commissioner said.

“This is unheard of in Sydney to have something like this, involving such an extensive volume of gunfire,” he stated to radio broadcaster ABC on Monday.
“We are extremely lucky that further destruction was avoided and certainly more injuries or indeed fatalities.”

King said it likely was alarming for the general public as well as for the attending law enforcement.

“What I can say is those initial police were fired upon. We have damaged police vehicles and we’re very fortunate that no police have been injured.”

Arrested Individual in Police Custody

The individual in his sixties was under police custody at Bankstown hospital and was expected to be questioned and formally accused on Monday.

Guns, such as a large-caliber rifle, were seized during his arrest, law enforcement stated.

Bystander Testimony

One eyewitness to the shooting reported to the ABC he was driving by and “listened to a series of bangs on the left side of the car, the taxi”.

“Subsequently, I glanced beside me, and I saw a couple of holes through the window right next to – on the passenger side,” he said.
“And I didn’t realise that the roof had a hole too. And I smelled the gunpowder, but I assumed since it was the night of the NRL grand final, perhaps individuals were lighting firecrackers or the like.”
