The Fianna Fáil nominee Jim Gavin stated he is withdrawing from the race for Ireland's head of state with "immediate effect".

He was scheduled to be one of three candidates vying for the role of Irish president, beside TD Catherine Connolly and Heather Humphreys of Fine Gael.

Yet, Sunday night he stated in a statement he had "made a mistake which did not align with his character and the standards I set myself."

"Considering all these factors, I've resolved to withdraw from the presidential race immediately and reunite with my loved ones," he said via a statement.

Additional details to come.
